Information technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.
Today, the term information technology has ballooned to encompass many aspects of computing and technology, and the term has become very recognizable. The information technology umbrella can be quite large, covering many fields. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems.
When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is information technology, or "infotech". Information Technology (IT) is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. Presumably, when speaking of Information Technology (IT) as a whole, it is noted that the use of computers and information are associated.
The term Information Technology (IT) is sometimes said to have been coined by Jim Domsic of Michigan in November 1981.Domsic, who worked as a computer manager for an automotive related industry, is supposed to have created the term to modernize the outdated phrase "data processing". The Oxford English Dictionary, however, in defining information technology as "the branch of technology concerned with the dissemination, processing, and storage of information, esp. by means of computers" provides an illustrative quote from the year 1958 (Leavitt & Whisler in Harvard Business Rev. XXXVI. 41/1 "The new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology.") that predates the so-far unsubstantiated Domsic coinage.
Why Information Technology is Require?
Information Technology give to companies and people away benefits, information technology is changing owr way of life, its improving it improving it in many ways ,but for companies there are two main reasons or benefits that shows the importance of IT;
The benefits of information technology,.
Increase productivity: basically fue to it allows the company to reduce costs, and then the firm is allowed to charge a lesser price without damaging the margin.
Get business intelligence: be ware of what is happening in the market, identify trends and needs timely could be a competitive advantage in the complex business dynamic of nowada
ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING SYSTEMS (ERPs)
Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs) integrate all data and processes of an organization into a unified system. A typical ERP system will use multiple components of computer software and hardware to achieve the integration. A key ingredient of most ERP systems is the use of a unified database to store data for the various system modules.
Master of Information Technology (MIT)
Master of Information Technology (MIT) is designed to cater to the needs of students who have got a background in a discipline other than Information Technology and wish to acquire skills in the rapidly advancing field of IT. Graduates will combine the IT skills with those of their previous knowledge in a professional applications-oriented setting and prepare themselves for the technological challenges and opportunities of the future arising in all fields including banking, telecommunications, defense, commerce, government, health, education and many other areas.
Graduates will develop the skills in the field of computer programming, software design, database management, networking and information systems audit and controls; demanded by the cyber space employment market. Specialization will be offered to meet the future needs of the Industry. Specialization will be offered to meet the future needs of the Industry.
A database can be defined as a structured collection of records or data that is stored in a computer so that a program can consult it to answer queries. The records retrieved in answer to queries become information that can be used to make decisions.
